The Curvy Girls Guide to Wearing Pleats
If you haven't noticed, pleated skirts have made a comeback! It's a big revival of an iconic 80's style and it's set to stick around through the winter season. But if you're like me and have curvy hips you might be wondering if its a style you should skip. Pleats add volume! There's no denying it! But that doesn't mean if you're curvy and really want to wear a pleated skirt that you shouldn't. All you need to know is a few secrets to rock your pleats with style!
Choose box pleats - There are many different types of pleats, knife pleats, accordion pleats, sunray pleats, but if you're curvy in the hip or tummy area then you'll want to choose a box pleat. A box pleat is a wider pleat and lays flatter so it doesn't add unnecessary volume and has a slimming effect.
Try a Yoke - A yoke is a piece of material that fits around the hips and provides support to the pleats. It looks very similar to a dropped waist. The yoke actually creates a smooth and slimming effect around the hips and the pleats start below the hip which creates balance.
Pick your color carefully - Dark colors have a slimming effect so will work to counteract some of the volume created by the pleats. So choose a darker color skirt and wear bright colors on top. You can also go monochromatic by wearing the same color skirt and top to create a long lean look.
Balance things out - If you add volume at the bottom then a simple thing to do is add volume at the top to create balance. Wear a top with shoulder details or add a chunky necklace to create balance with the pleats.
So are you ready to rock pleats?
