How To Find The Perfect Fitting Bra
Updated: May 7, 2019
Finding the perfect fitting bra can sometimes feel like finding a needle in a haystack. We follow the measurement charts, we head to a lingerie store to get professionally measured, but we still end up wearing bras that feel too loose or that make us feel like we can't breathe, and we hate the fact that each day we don't get to feel comfortable. Part of the issue with the bra measurement system, and the reason why a third of women are wearing the wrong size bra, is the measurement system was created many years ago and related to old school manufacturing of bras. With new technology for manufacturing developing over the years, the measurements have never been adjusted, which is why you can measure as a 34c but it doesn't fit you as well as it should. So how do we find the right bra? Get measured by a professional to get an estimated size, then follow the tips below to find the perfect fit for you!
1. When you buy a new bra it should always be fastened on the the first hook. If you have to fasten on the third hook then the band size is too big and you need to go down a band size. I can hear you all asking, then why do bras have multiple fasteners? Simple! As you wear and wash your bra the fabric naturally stretches, so as your bra ages you can fasten on the second or third hooks so that it continues to fit you well.
Another test for getting the right band size is the finger test. Place your finger at the front centre of the bra band (the gore). Your finger should be able to easily slide under the band. If you can fit more than two fingers under the band then you need a smaller band size. If you can't fit two fingers then you need to try a bigger band size. You can also use the finger test at the back where the bra fastens. The same rules will apply!
2. Finding the right cup size is just as important as finding the right band size. The cup and band size are two separate measurements and should be treated that way! Find the right band size first and stick to it! Don't interchange band and cup sizes! The cup should fit like a glove and be smooth all over the breast area. Always choose an underwire cup! It's impossible to find the perfect fit with wireless bras! If you bend forward slightly and a gap is created between the cup and your breast, then the cup size is too big. If you're breasts are bulging at the top or at the sides then the you need to try a larger cup size.
3. Believe it or not, your bra straps should feel comfortable! In fact you should not be aware of them throughout the day! Most bra straps are adjustable, which makes it easier to find the best fit for your shoulders, but if you find yourself shortening the straps in order to get the cup to fit right, then you need a smaller cup size. The straps are there to gently hold the bra up, not to help the cup fit over the breast! Bra straps should not create indentations in your shoulder, and if they do then it's because you are relying on them for too much support. This can happen a lot if you have large breasts, and you need to look at different styles of bras that will give you more support from the cup and underneath. Think of it like a plastic bag. If you put heavy bottles in a plastic bag and then carry it by the handles then it feels really heavy and is more difficult to carry. Now try carrying the bag by holding the bottom. So much easier to carry and doesn't feel quite as heavy!
4. With so many different styles of bras available these days it can be difficult to decide what style is best for you. It really is a game of trial and error to find the best for your breast size and shape. Try on different ones and see which feels most comfortable and which gives you a nice smooth silhouette. You may also find that your bra size changes with the different styles so it's important to try them on even if you think you've found your perfect size.
Finding the perfect bra size is not a one shot deal and it's something you need to check regularly to keep the perfect fit. But once you find the right size then you'll notice how much more comfortable you feel and how much easier moving around can be without the worry of a strap falling down or something popping out, LOL.
